2020 has been a beast of a year, and we’ve still got a third left. I don’t dare ask what’s next. I’m confounded by the deaths of the Black Mamba and the Black Panther in a world reeling with loss. My pain flares anew at memes that question whether my Blackness matters. The last days of summer are heavy in their hotness. The humidity was 81 percent today. I kept forgetting what day it was. I almost forgot to share.

I was going to do a quick write but the prompt, plucked from Hindus and Buddhists by Sister Nivedita and Ananda K. Coomaraswamy added to the heft of the day. I’ve kept it as the title but I don’t want to share more suffering and sadness. There will be more of that tomorrow. We can depend on the news cycle and the internet for that.

We can depend on the sunrise too. Everyone needs solar vitamins. Sunshine reminds me to feed the light within so I’m going to share two of my favourite summer blends. Some liquid sunshine from me to you.

Grow Sunshine in a Glass
2/3 fresh pineapple, cubed
1/3 fresh cucumber, peeled and cubed
half a dozen mint leaves
blend together and enjoy (blend with ice or without and serve over ice)

Spicy Sunshine
a nob of ginger, grated or finely chopped
juice of two lemons
handful of mint leaves
1/2 teaspoon of honey (if you need to turn the spice down)
add water and blend

All ingredients are organic or locally sourced to ensure the highest Prana. I’m not a big follower of recipes so everything is eyeballed by what I put into a 750ml Ninja smoothie cup. I’m not a fan of ice so I don’t blend it into my drinks. Do you.

I don’t have a photo of the juice but this cardinal comes to visit me often.

Some Indigenous cultures believe a cardinal is the daughter of the sun. Some say when a cardinal appears angels are near. I just love it when they visit. It’s the little things.
Drink your sunshine. Fight for the light.
